• 5.0 out of 5 stars from John K. Mainieri -- Lyrical And Surprising : I discovered another terrific novel by accident. I’ve never heard of this author, but there’s something about his book that tells me he’s not done with this particular story. The last few pages deliver a gut punch you never saw coming, and I wouldn’t technically classify this as a mystery novel, although there are deaths, some accidental, some deliberate , and some engineered by God. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Fiction lover -- Huge Disappointment : I loved Wiley Cash’s other novels. I preordered this novel and opened the first page with great anticipation. What an incredible letdown. The plot is dated, the characters are dated and it feels like one big effort to virtue signal. I didn’t really get invested in a single character: each character was so one dimensional. I plodded on through only to arrive at one of the all time most ridiculous endings ever. The reader had to crawl through a narrative that took a paragraph to describe smoking a cigarette only to end with a one page summary that wrapped it all up. I felt as if the writer had a word count and once he hit the mark he just did a two paragraph wrap. I once loved Wiley Cash as a writer: not so much now. If I read him again, it won’t be a preorder. It will be a discounted book and only to see if he cared enough about his work to try and redeem himself. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )

I think the writer was even tired of this book and ended it abruptly. Too many loose ends at the end. I want the whole story, so unless there will be a sequel, you'd be wise to read a different book. Don’t understand very unsatisfactory ending of this book. Not wasting time rereading, hope I find a review which will help me understand this book. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lagoon -- Slowly does it. : I suspected that this would be a slow burner but the pace just wasn’t quite enough. The mystery surrounding a downed aircraft is gently played out and although the denouement and the reasons for actions are all solid, the filling between the opening chapter and the conclusion is just too staid. There’s a lot of reflection and poignancy. This did have the effect of making what is a fairly short book feel like a longer read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 21, 2021 )
